What RTP means in slots: calculation, limitations, and where to find it

RTP stands for Return to Player. In slots, also known as slot machines, it represents the theoretical percentage of the total amount wagered that is returned to players over the long term. This percentage does not indicate how much you will receive in a round or session.
How RTP is determined
The developer defines the theoretical RTP for a particular game configuration. This percentage may be determined through mathematical analysis or estimated through simulations of a very large number of rounds, depending on the slot's characteristics.
The formula for the return percentage is: (total returned to players ÷ total wagered) × 100.
When applied to past results, this calculation describes the observed return in that sample. It does not establish the game's theoretical RTP: calculating the return on your bets shows what happened during the period analyzed, without predicting what will happen afterward.
RTP does not predict the outcome of your session
- Theoretical RTP: describes the proportional return expected by the mathematical model for a particular game configuration.
- Observed return: results from the payouts and wagers in a sample. It may vary between sessions and periods.
- Volatility: describes the variation in payouts. In general, high volatility is associated with larger, less frequent payouts; low volatility, with smaller, more frequent payouts. It does not predict when a payout will occur.
RTP and the house edge
The theoretical house edge equals 100% minus the RTP. Therefore, a higher RTP indicates a higher theoretical proportional return and a lower house edge.
This relationship allows you to compare a mathematical characteristic of slots. It does not determine how much a person will lose in a session, nor does it mean that the game will have more frequent payouts.
Where to check the game version
Third-party lists may show different percentages for the same slot because the values may correspond to different versions, game modes, or configurations. The developer may offer different RTP configurations, and the operator chooses which one to make available.
For this reason, the game's name alone is not enough to confirm the applicable percentage. Before citing or comparing values, check the provider's or regulator's official documentation and whether it matches the available configuration.
Open the slot's information
On mobile, look for the information icon or the rules, help, or paytable menu. The RTP may appear in these sections.
Check the version and game mode
Verify that the stated percentage corresponds to the configuration offered by the operator and the mode you are checking. Do not automatically treat a value from another version as applicable.
Compare with the official documentation
Consult the provider's or regulator's material. If it differs from a third-party list, reconfirm the version, mode, and configuration before using the number as a reference.
Record the source and verification date
When citing a slot's RTP percentage or another specific value about the game, include the official source and the date it was checked. A number reproduced by third parties, without official confirmation that it applies, is not sufficient as a factual reference.
